However, in October 2015, the BCCI announced that it would host the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 at Dharamsala instead of Kolkata due to an issue with the availability of Eden Gardens as a venue because of a court case involving its owners. This decision was made after consultation with all concerned parties including Government of India and West Bengal State Cricket Association (WBCA).

The remaining teams advance to the super 10 round by playing against other qualified sides in their own section, who are ranked from 5 to 9 according to their performance in previous tournaments.
