The 2022 FIFA World Cup is the 20th FIFA World Cup. It will be held in Qatar from 20 November 2022 to 18 December 2022. The tournament will be the first World Cup held in the Arab world, and it is also the first time that Qatar has ever hosted a major football tournament. The nation has previously hosted some events of the 2011 Asian Cup, including the opening ceremony. The 2022 World Cup will be the first World Cup tournament to be hosted by a country that has an active league of its own, as well as being the first in which all teams qualify automatically instead of having to pre-qualify.

Qatar will be the first Arab country to host the FIFA World Cup. The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 21st FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The bidding process to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup began in January 2009, and national associations had until 2 February 2009 to register a bid. Following this, a meeting took place between all candidates in Zurich on 2 December 2009 where the bidders were divided into two groups: those that applied but never controlled a confederation (Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea) and those that have or have had control of one (Argentina, Belgium/Netherlands, Brazil/Mexico). The joint bid from the United States/Canada was chosen by FIFA on 2 June 2010 after beating out Morocco's bid 4 votes to 1.
